God's Commands Are For Our Own Good
March 28, 2013

Scripture:  "And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?" - Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Observation:  God gives His people specific instructions, not to be mean or to hurt them, but because He loves us and wants what is best for us.  God guides us in the way to live because He is our creator and knows how He designed us.  God has the master plan for living the best life possible in this very broken and messed up world.  Unfortunately, we are so sinful that we reject God's ways of living and do our own thing.  The result is that we do wrong things and suffer the painful consequences.

Application:
I am reminded of how important it is to love God, embrace His instructions, and live according to what He says.  When I do this I know that I am doing what is best for my own good.

Prayer:
Thank you, Lord, that you love me enough to not leave me to figure out life on my own.  Thank you for instructing me in how to live, love you, and walk in your ways.  Give me your grace to live in obedience to you, each day.

God Delights In Those Who Seek Him
January 02, 2012

Scripture:  "At that time men began to call on the name of the Lord." - Genesis 4:26

"Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." - Genesis 5:24

Observation:  God created all - the universe and humanity.  He designed us to have a relationship with Him.  Adam and Eve walked with God and they talked together.  Yet sin entered the world through their rebellioin against God.  Over the hundreds of years that followed we see a population that grew and covered the earth, yet the knowledge of God greatly diminished.  Even so, there are a couple bright spots.  Our verses for today include two of those.  What an event to record, something that pleased the Lord - when people began to call on Him; when Enoch walked in a close relationship to God.  God was so delighted that He took Enoch to heaven without even dying.

Application:  These verses remind me of what is most important in life.  They remind me of what pleases God.  He delights in a relationship with us.  He wants to be close to us and to communicate with us.  He wants us to talk with Him, rather than ignoring Him.  I want to have this kind of an intimate relationship with the Lord.

Prayer:  Lord, I thank you for the reminder that seeking you is the most important thing in life.  Help me to faithfully pursue you with all my heart.
